HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
Prices vary widely, and are based on how much product (vials) are used. Consultations are free, and Dr. Hartt will discuss the anticipated cost with you prior to injecting, so there are no unpleasant surprises. However, cost is not always the best way to decide who should administer your injections. In order to have natural looking results, you need to ensure your injector has not only an extensive knowledge of facial anatomy, but also a good aesthetic eye. The quality of the result always depends on who is on the other end of the needle.
WILL THIS TREATMENT HURT?
Injecting dermal fillers can be slightly uncomfortable depending on the depth of injection needed. However, topical numbing cream can be applied to the area prior to treatment, and some Dermal Fillers have additional anesthetic mixed in with them too to further minimize any discomfort. Some clients will also take acetaminophen (Tylenol) 30 minutes before their appointment.
WILL THIS TREATMENT MAKE ME LOOK UN-NATURAL?
Dermal fillers can literally take years off your appearance- the results are that dramatic. However, as with any cosmetic procedure, over-treatment is possible, and can cause undesirable results. That’s why it’s important to be treated by an experienced and aesthetically inclined doctor who can assess your appearance and appropriately decide how much product you will need.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
Short term side effects can include redness, swelling, pain, itching, bruising or tenderness at the injection site. Lips can be particularly sensitive and swelling may last for a few days. These effects can be relieved with a cold compress, arnica cream, or over-the-counter pain relievers. There is no evidence to date of any long-term safety concerns associated with the treatment, as the body naturally metabolises the product over time.
If you have a history of cold sores, the likelihood of an outbreak is high with lip injections. A anti-herpes treatment is advised to hopefully stop this from happening. There is always a risk of an allergic reaction, but this is extremely rare. There is also a risk of infection, this is why it is vital to be treated in a clinically safe environment where stringent sterile precautions can be taken.
WHAT’S THE IDEAL AGE TO START USING DERMAL FILLERS?
There is no age at which a patient can choose to receive dermal fillers- but they must be over 18 to comply with insurance regulations.
HOW LONG DO DERMAL FILLERS LAST?
It varies from patient to patient, but results usually are immediate, and can last from 12-24 months. Lip fillers may last for slightly less time.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RESTYLANE®, PERLANE®, and JUVÉDERM®?
All three products are made from non-animal hyaluronic acid, but they differ in viscosity. RESTYLANE® and JUVÉDERM® have very similar texture, but JUVÉDERM® may be slightly smoother, and can last slightly longer. PERLANE® has the highest molecular weight, and is better for injecting into areas such as the nasolabial fold (lines from corner of nose to edge of lips), cheeks, or where a denser filler is required.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT THE DAY AFTER MY APPOINTMENT?
Results are immediate- most clients are surprised by how great they look immediately following treatment. Best results are seen within 2-5 days. Dermal filler injections can cause swelling and redness which should diminish within 24 hours, and patients taking medications that contain aspirin or NSAIDs (anti-inflammatories) have more bruising- arnica is often a better choice. Patients can wear makeup immediately but should avoid strenuous heat, exercise, or exposure to the sun for 24-48 hours following injections. If you are preparing for a big event- you should plan to inject at least a month before- in case touch-up treatment is required.
